It's that time of year again! Time to hand out the virtual trophies for Bike of the Year 2006! Let's review the rules before we get too much further... We give out awards in three different categories. Bike of the Year, Trike of the Year and European Bike of the Year. There are also &Editor's Choice Awards& in all three categories, giving a total of six prizes. If voting is exceptionally close, we occasionally award an honorable mention as well. Only bikes that are new or majorly overhauled for 2006 will be considered. Nominees are listed below but feel free to write in anyone we forgot. Some bikes were intentionally left out because they are just too new for anyone to have really ridden them much even though they are technically &new in '06&. A good example of this is the Easy Racers Javelin or the new RANS V3. These machines will be entered in next year's voting. Each manufacturer is limited to two entries. ALL VOTES MUST BE SUBMITTED BY E-MAIL TO . Votes cast on the message board, via snail mail or scratched onto a brick and tossed through my living room window will be ignored in the final count. - The Agio is Bacchetta's first ever long wheelbase model. It features an alloy frame and a very comfortable asking price. We found it to be a great ride for the money.
- The Cafe is Bacchetta's unique take on a &budget& recumbent. It has a configuration that is much different than many other American recumbents and retails for under $1000.
- Bike Friday did a major redesign of their folding suitcase 'bent for 2006. This new version is much easier to fold and is a bit more performance oriented while remaining a capable touring 'bent.

- Until this year, the Cruzbike moving bottom bracket front wheel drive recumbent was only available as a kit. For 2006, the company has added a production version.
- RANS always has a &January surprise& bike. This year it was the Formula 26. This is a dual 26& version of the V2 Formula and is a bit more performance oriented than the Stratus XP that won last year's voting.
- This is a bike that is often overlooked by performance SWB shoppers. For 2006, it got a new seat, new fork and disc brakes.
TRIKE OF THE YEAR
- This low-priced tadpole is new for Actionbent this year. It has a mesh seat and comes with some pretty nice components.
- The 700 is Catrike's new flagship model. It's also quite possibly the fastest production trike on the planet right now. And the price isn't high enough to cause a divorce. It's also been our most-read review since the format switch.
- Catrike switched the Road back to direct steering for 2006. But it's not the same direct steering it had before. This is the new brakesteer-free set-up similar to the 2005 Speed.
- Greenspeed's GLO is the latest addition to their &Custom Shop& range of trikes. Think of it as an X5 without the folding feature and with a very wide range of options available.
- HPVelotechnik's first trike definitely doesn't feel like a first effort. The Scorpion is an outstanding touring trike that definitely retains that classic HPVelo feel.
- ICE added an entirely new rear end to its &standard range& for 2006. This new piece allows the trikes to fold and gives it a fair amount of rear suspension. The Q is the general purpose trike in their range.
- The S has received the same improvements for this year that the Q got. The S is a sportier trike with a hardshell seat.
- Sidewinder's unique rear steer tadpole got decidedly cheaper in 2006. At $1595 this trike is a pretty good bargain.
- The Cruiser is quite a coup for Wizwheelz. It's the first trike from a &classic& trike builder to come in at a really reasonable price. The $1299 Cruiser actually varies only slightly from its more expensive stablemates and is a real bargain.
EUROPEAN BIKE OF THE YEAR
- Azub added a new asymetrical swingarm to their budget-priced full suspension USS/SWB for 2006. This improved the bikes performance and aesthetics. - The dual 26 inch Max got the same improvements as its little brother this year. The &Harcore& version is set for off roading with knobby tires and a serious suspension fork. - Some companies never quit. The already light Fujin SL lowracer was made even lighter with the addition of a carbon boom and numerous other svelte bits. This has proven to be a pretty popular bike despite its high price.
- The Speed Machine got a major rework for 2006. It included a new Body-Link seat (maybe the best hardshell on the market) and a slightly higher seat height.
- Carbon Fiber and Titanium are both irresistible to cycling enthusiasts. Combine them BOTH in a sexy lowracer package and you're liable to hurt someone. The new TiCa is light and fast, but not cheap.
- Nazca has been teasing this new rear suspension lowracer for a year or two now. It's finally available and has been very well received for its ride and superb build quality.
- Optima has put their rear suspension lowracer into more serial production after years of near one-offs. It's lighter than most of its competitors.
- Optima has finally entered the highracer market with the new Cougar. It's fairly light and has rear suspension.
