Moreover, sheasserts that she is an American writer and she can impossibly have the viewpoint ofChinese writers. To display Chinese culture or to representAmerican life? Through analyzing the four mothers’ Chinese stories, this thesis finds outthese Chinese stories in fact convey American life: American dream, individualism,identity-vacancy and identity-seeking. In The Joy Luck Club, Chinese stories only providethe writing context for the writer. During this period, many Chinese American writers emerged, like华中科技大学硕士学位论文2Lin Yutang with Chinatown Family in 1948, and Chin Yang Lee with Flower Drum Songin 1957.In the 60s of the 20thcentury, Virginia Lee and Betty Lee Sung respectively publishedThe House that Tai Ming Built in 1963 and Mountain of Gold in 1967. These two worksdescribe the history of Chinese American’s striving in America. The 70s and 80s in the 20thcentury were very important periods for ChineseAmerican literature. From here Chinese American literature started marching towardprosperity. During this period, there were two important writers, Frank Chin and MaxineHong Kingston. In 1974 the other important writer, Frank Chin with Jeffery Paul Chan &Shawn Hsu Wong, edited Aiiieeeee! An Anthology of Asian-American Writers. In 1976Maxine Hong Kingston published her first novel: The Woman Warrior: Memoirs of aGirlhood Among Ghosts, which became a symbol of the peak of Chinese Americanliterature. This book with its unique perspective and technique, rich culture images andpeculiar stories shocked American cultural field and attracted the critics’ attention. Chang Yaoxin, a famous professor of American literaturefrom Nankai University, concludes Chinese American literature in his A Survey ofAmerican Literature which came out in

Amy Tan es awell-known writer. The Joy Luck Club is divided into four parts including sixteen stories of four华中科技大学硕士学位论文4immigrant mothers and their daughters who were born in America. The four pairs ofmothers and daughters are: Suyuan and June, Lindo and Waverly, Ying-ying and Lena,An-mei and Rose. The name of this novel originates from a club one of the four mothers,Suyuan, initiated in China and in this club the members played Chinese mah jong. Theclub was set up to lift their spirit and help them to get through their difficulties in life. When Suyuan arrived in America, she set it up for the second time.In the following years, Amy Tan continuously published other novels. Amy Tan has enjoyed a world-wide fame with her novel, which influence manypeople all over the world. Until now, Amy Tan still has been considered to be the mostpopular and productive Chinese American writer.0.3 Literature ReviewAmy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club has attracted lots of researchers’ attention. The NewYork Times Book ments that Amy Tan has wonderful insight, good dialogue, and natural and smooth way of writing.Mother-daughter relationship is frequently talked about in The Joy Luck Club. Forexample, Zheng Xian, in her article “On Culture Connotation of ‘Mother Image’ andMother-daughter Relationship”, interprets that mother has the image of being a mediatefor ethnic memory history and carrier of Chinese culture. Meanwhile this article shows therelationship between mothers and daughters moves towards conciliation from conflicts.Xia Xiaoyan in her thesis “Clashes and Acculturation — On the Mother-daughterRelationship in The Joy Luck Club from the Language and Culture Perspectives” talkedthe theme of mother-daughter relationship in the linguistic and cultural point of view and华中科技大学硕士学位论文5she points out that Chinese Americans who position between two worlds of Chinese (east)and America (west) should make advantage of their culture privilege to step out of theirdilemma. The New mented on The Joy Luck Club that it described the stronglove and misunderstanding lying between mothers and daughters.Culture identity is often mentioned in the criticism of The Joy Luck Club. In ChenLeilei in her article “Highlighting and Dissipation of American Mainstream Ideology—Rereading Amy Tan” states that the patible conflicts between mothers and daughtersand their identity of being “Others” highlight the mainstream American ideology. At thesame time, she thinks that the mothers were in a cultural dilemma. They acceptedAmerican culture but searched their self in Chinese culture. Their double culturalidentities dissipate the absolute power of American mainstream culture. Hu Yamin in herarticle “The New Role of Current Immigrants—On New Cognition of Chinese Americansin The Joy Luck Club” explores the new development of Chinese Americans’ cultureidentity. It displays the process from refusing to accept Chinese culture identity toadmitting their double culture identities. Guan Hefeng, in her Seeking Identity BetweenWorlds: A Study of Chinese American Women’s Literature, she establishes a new culturalidentity of their own by negotiating the contradictions between the Eastern and Westernworlds, between male and female cultures. Orlando mented that this novelrecalled the problem existing in the two generations of mothers and daughters.Cultural conflicts and conciliation between two cultures are also attracts many critics’attention. Cheng Aimin talked about this theme in his “Conflicts and Conciliation betweenChinese and American cultures: Reading The Joy Luck Club on the perspective of culture”.In his article, Cheng Aimin thought that from the perspective of culture, the conflicts andconciliation between mothers and daughters in fact are the conflicts and conciliation ofChinese and American cultures. At the same time, the author believes that it is the writer’shope that the two cultures can move towards conciliation from confrontation.Racism is another theme issued on The Joy Luck Club. In her Cultural Research华中科技大学硕士学位论文6Tendency in Chinese American Literature(Lu 135-156), via symptomatic reading, Lu Weiexcavated the theme of silence hid in the text of The Joy Luck Club in order to revealChinese Americans’ spiritual and physical harm left by racism on one hand, and showsChinese American writers’ silent resistance towards racialism, colonialism on the otherhand.Narrative strategy is another theme mentioned in The Joy Luck Club. For example,Guan Hefeng probes this theme in chapter three of her book Seeking Identity BetweenWorlds: A Study of Chinese American Women’s Literature. Zhang Ruihua, in “On Mahjong& The Theme and Structure of The Joy Luck Club” shows Amy Tan adopts theplaying-method and the card-meaning of Chinese mah jong to launch the theme andstructure of The Joy Luck Club. The four pairs of mothers and daughters tell their storiesjust as the order they play Chinese mah jong. The San Diego Union believed that thestories can be read individually, but they would be better if read in a whole. In sum, most existing ments on the theme of mother-daughterrelationship, culture conflicts and conciliation, culture identity, racism and narrativestrategy to explore the love and misunderstanding between two generations, the conflictsand conciliation lying in two cultures, the double culture identity of Chinese Americans, the racism of the western culture, and the structure of the novel in The Joy Luck Club. Moreover, most existing researches on The Joy Luck Club hold the views that mothers’Chinese stories tell Chinese life while the daughters’ stand for American life. As anAmerican writer with Chinese descent, Amy Tan is usually considered to be thespokesman for Chinese culture. However, Elaine H. Kim once stated we can not say John Steinbeck’s works display allwhite Americans or German Americans. Therefore, we can not declare Chinese Americanwriters’ works only represent Chinese Americans. Then does Amy Tan’s The Joy LuckClub represent Chinese life? Moreover, Amy Tan asserts that she is an Americans writer all the time and states that播放器加载中,请稍候...
