Mrs. Amatuli was my teacher in the fourth grade. One day at lunch time, I was getting ready to eat my same old tuna fish (金枪鱼)sandwich and suddenly Mrs. Amatuli asked me if she could buy my sandwich from me. She explained that I could use the money to buy a hot lunch from the cafeteria.
I was thrilled. I never bought my lunch at the cafeteria. It was too expensive for my family ,and I always carried my lunch and brought the bag back home to use again the next day. My sandwiches were either bologna(大香肠)or tuna fish. Ir rarely varied beyond that.
You can understand my delight when I had the opportunity to buy a hot lunch.
When we finished lunch that day, Mrs. Amatuli took me aside and said she wanted to explain why she had bought my sandwiches. I really didn&t care why ,but it gave me a few minutes of her precious attention so I was very quiet as she explained. You sec, she was

I realize now that Mrs. Amatuli could have fixed herself a tuna sandwich of Friday. But she bought my sandwiches because she saw a little girl who was thrilled over the simple act of having a hot lunch.

If you and your friends wish to share a secret, you can write it in code ,and no one else will be able to read it. Codes are one way of writing in secret. Ciphers (暗码)are another. In a code each word is written as a secret code word or a code number. In a cipher each letter is changed.
Codes and ciphers have played an important role in the history of the world. Julius Cae&sar, the Roman ruler who defeated almost all the countries in Europe about 2,000 years ago, used a cipher when he sent secret messages to his troops. During the American Revolution, George Washington&s spies used a kind of code to send his information about the enemy be&fore his military action. In World War II ,the Americans &broke& or figured out Japan&s most important navy codes and got enough information to destroy a powerful Japanese fleet.
Storekeepers use codes to mark their goods. The codes show how much is paid for the goods or when they are added to the stock.. Businessmen use codes to hide plans from their business enemies. Sometimes personal letters or diaries are written in code. Many people en&joy figuring out codes and ciphers simply as a hobby.
In the 16th century ,and ciphers were very popular among scientists. They wrote messages to each other in code so that no one else would learn their secrets. Geronimo Gardano ,an Italian astrologer (占星家),mathematician, and doctor, invented the trellis cipher. He took two sheets of paper and cut exactly the same holes in each one. Then he sent one sheet, which he called a trellis ,to a friend and kept the other for himself. Whenever he wan&ted to write a message ,he put his trellis over a clean sheet of paper and wrote the secret mes&sage through the holes. There he removed the trellis and filled the rest of the paper with words that would make sense. When his friend received it ,he put his trellis over the writing and read the secret message.
55. The best title of this passage would be ______.
A. Codes and ciphers &S! Differences between codes and ciphers
C. History of codes and ciphers &D. Inventors of codes and ciphers
56. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Ciphers can be broken or figured out more easily than codes.
B. You could read some words in Geronimo7S letter without his trellis.
C. The first person who ever used a cipher in history was Julius Caesar.
D. ,Fondness of using codes was the hobby of the scientists in the 1600s.
57.According to Geronimo Gardano , a trellis is ______.
A. a piece of paper with many small holes
B. a secret message with a lot of small holes
C. a letter with unreadable words and sentences
D. a sheet of paper with groups of Arabic figures
58. It is NOT mentioned in the passage that codes and ciphers are used for the purpose of ______
A. military affairs &B. commercial secrets
C. scientific achievements &D. personal enjoyment
Albert Einstein ^ S Theory of Relativity might have a few mistakes一and Jake Barnett has set out to prove it. Between attending college classes at Indiana University Purdue Universi&ty (IUPU ) and tutoring his fellow students, Jake is also working on a new theory about the creation of the universe. He happens to be 12 years old.
From an early age, Jake showed an extraordinary interest in stars. When he was 3, his parents took him to a space observatory. He tried to learn as much as he could about astron&omy. Jake&s IQ measured remarkably high at 170.
As a toddler(幼童),Jake was diagnosed with Asperser&s syndrome, a form of autism (孤独症).Autism causes difficulties in communication and social abilities. People with au&tism may also have intense interests-like Jake&s interest in the stars at a young age.
The symptoms of autism can range from mild to extremely severe. Asperser&s is one of the milder forms of autism. Sometimes people with Asperser&s, like Jake, develop incredibly advanced skills in science, music, and art.
When Jake was in elementary school , his parents worried that the effects of his Asperser&s were worsening. He was withdrawing from people. So a doctor recommended that Jake&s parents let him study more advanced subjects, like math and physics.
Jake&s mother asked an astronomy professor to let Jake sit in on his class. Now, Jake studies advanced sciences like electromagnetic physics at IUPU.
But Jake thinks it&s important to have a normal life too. He likes to play Guitar Hero with his friends and watch science fiction movies. He also enjoys playing classical music on the piano.
His parents have started My Jacob&s Place, a support center for families dealing with autism. On Wednesday nights, Jake tutors other kids with special needs in addition to help&ing out some of his university classmates.
But studying physics takes priority. Jake7S professor* John, Ross, is working on get&ting grand money for Jake to do research at the university.
Doctors have said Jake&s autism symptoms have lessened over time. Still, Jake proudly refers to himself as an &Aspy& , or someone with Asperser&s. In an interview with his uni&versity^ student newspaper, he said,&I think the autism is the reason Pm even at IUPU. &
59. What does Jake want to do now?

Sailing Through History A group of 1,309 passengers boarded the MS Balmoral on Sunday, in Southampton, England, on a voyage to retrace the path of the Titanic. The Titanic was the biggest ship in the world when it sailed on its ill-fated maiden voyage in 1912. Of the 2,227 passengers and crew aboard, more than 1,500 died. The ship, which was headed to New York City, carried the rich and famous on its first voyage. It also carried immigrants, who were seeking a better life in America.
Relatives of people who sailed on the Titanic, historians, authors and people fascinated by the story of the unsinkable ship, are on the Balmoral . They want to remember the doomed ship and those who died on her first and last voyage. The historic liner had set sail on April 10,1912, from Southampton. Late at night on April 14, she hit an iceberg. In the early morning hours of April 15, the Titanic sank
The Balmoral is following Titanic&s original route from Southampton. First, the mod&ern-day cruise liner docked in the port of Cherbourg, France, where the Titanic had picked up more passengers. On Monday afternoon, the Balmoral stops in Cobh, Ireland, the Ti- tanic&s last port of call before sailing to New York.
Balmoral will then cruise the North Atlantic Ocean to the location where Titanic hit an iceberg that ripped the ship&s hull(外壳)& On Sunday, April 15, at 2:20 a. m. &the time the Titanic went down&passengers and crew will hold a memorial service. The next two days will be spent in Halifax, Canada, where many victims of the sinking are buried. Then, the Balmoral will reach its final destination in New York City, where Titanic was supposed to dock&but never did.
Until today, several teams of divers have explored the site. They have recovered some items such as dishes and silverware and put them on public display. And more trips are planned to the wreckage in the future. The Titanic and its passengers and crew have been re&membered in books, movies and TV programs. But there&s a much more important contribu&tion that Titanic gave us. After she sank, lawmakers and shipbuilders made ships safer. It took a terrible tragedy to make ship travel safer for all.

Humankind has tried to improve its standard of living since the very beginning of civili&zation. Back then, as well as today, providing food and security was the basic task for a per&son. However ,nowadays the range of required goods has expanded significantly. People feel the need for not only some primary things, such as a piece of bread and a roof over their heads, but also for various facilities and luxuries. Providing humanity with these things is connected to the use of natural resources, which requires energy. In turn, the common sources of energy we use today cause pollution, so economic growth is almost inevitably as&sociated with environmental damage.
Economic growth is the increase in numbers of goods and services produced over time by an economy, and it&s calculated in terms of real Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Before growth is calculated, inflation (通货膨胀)is adjusted in order to take into account its mis&leading effect on the price of goods and services. Economic growth can also be explained as the increase in expected output, which results from an increase in actual output, or total de&mand.
There are certain aspects of economic growth which affect the environment- The first of these is the fact that in order to produce more goods and products, at a faster rate, the con&struction of large industrial plants is required. These plants produce a lot of waste, leading to the pollution of water and the atmosphere, which may cause negative long term health effects to nearby populations of animals ,or people. They also lead to global warming.
Industrial manufacturing leads to the constantly increasing energy consumption. The traditional energy sources, which are commonly used nowadays, are considered to be the greatest polluters to the environment. There also exist so & called eco&friendly sources of energy. They are sometimes preferred but replacing the traditional sources with them also requires time, during which people have to make some sacrifices to support these undertak&ings.
In order to produce economically practical energy, a sometimes significant transforma&tion of the natural site is often inevitable. 丁his is expensive and, has harmful effects on the. environment. Application of wind energy would block airflows7 natural speed& which is the reason for their decrease in strength, after crossing the windmill. Consequently, the pres&sure balance that is brought about by this current will be affected, and it is important to re&member that the environment and weather conditions are directly affected by atmospheric pressure.
For these reasons, bringing about economic growth without any resulting environmental damage, whatsoever, is impossible.
67. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. - Pollution caused by plant construction
B. Effects of windmills on the environment
C. Economic growth and human civilization
D. Economic growth and environmental damage
68. What does the underlined word &They& in the third paragraph refer to?
A. Goods and products & &B. The industrial plants
C. Water and atmosphere &D. Negative health effects
69. According to the passage, the author holds the opinion that ______.
A. economic growth should be calculated in terms of GDP
B. use of natural resources causes no damage to the environment
C. industrial manufacturing may cause damage to the environment
D. a windmill is a perfect way to produce economically practical energy
