CONNECTTWEETEMAILMOREChrysler Group, prodded by U.S. safety regulators, will add 139,115 vehicles to a recall for air bags that could explode with too much force.Chrysler says another 69,668 vehicles covered by a previous, related recall also are part of the Thursday expansion, meaning the latest action affects 208,783 vehicles.The latest expansion covers the Ram pickup from the 2003 to 2005 model years, as well as the 2004 and 2005 Dodge Durango, 2005 Chrysler 300 and 2005 Dodge Magnum. It brings Chrysler into compliance with demands from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for passenger air bags.It's part of a growing problem worldwide with air bag inflators made by Japanese auto parts giant Takata Corp.STORY: At first Chrysler agreed to replace passenger air bag inflators in Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands -- areas where high humidity seems to exacerbate the problem. Other automakers have issued regional recalls as well.But under pressure from NHTSA, the company late Thursday added more humid areas. The new boundaries are for vehicles sold in or ever registered in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and five U.S. territories.The latest expansion brings the total number of Chrysler vehicles recalled for Takata air bags to 617,573.Chrysler emphasizes that no Takata bags have deployed improperly in any of its vehicles, and that it is expanding the recall because of "an abundance of caution."Even so, a nationwide recall by all automakers using Takata bags would be better, says Karl Brauer, senior analyst for Kelley Blue Book, because "confirmed fatalities related to these airbags have occurred outside these recall regions.""How confident can consumers really be if their vehicles are equipped with Takata airbags but are located outside of the recall areas?" Brauer says.NHTSA is more demanding on Takata driver's airbags, pushing for a nationwide recall after finding examples of driver's bag defects outside high-humidity areas. And, NHTSA reasons, there's always a driver, compounding the level of risk vs. passenger bags.STORY: The Takata air bags can explode with too much force and spew shrapnel into the passenger compartment. Takata has said that long exposure to airborne humidity can cause the air bag propellant to burn too quickly. That can blow apart inflator canisters and spew plastic and metal parts into the passenger compartment.U.S. recalls for defective Takata airbags began with a 2008 nationwide recall by Honda, Takata's biggest U.S. customer. It came after two people were killed by bag shrapnel.Another three deaths have been identified since then.The recalls have grown in size and expanded to other automakers, and now include roughly 18 million cars and trucks worldwide. Takata refuses to initiate a recall on its own, leaving the individual automakers to handle the issue.So far, 10 automakers have recalled about 11 million vehicles in the U.S. for the Takata defects.The 10 met in a Ramulus, Mich., hotel Thursday to plan a joint, coordinated investigation of the bags.STORY: That amounts to a striking rebuke to the car companies' safety-equipment supplier. And it could give the group of automakers compelling data developed by outside experts and engineers to use as the basis of a lawsuit against Takata, though they haven't said they plan to sue.STORY: Some of the 10 have agreed to Notices demand to recall the driver's bags nationwide, but it's a moot point at the moment because there aren't enough replacements to handle a countrywide recall. And the automakers want to first fix cars in the humid areas where the danger's greatest before beginning in less-dangerous areas.Chrysler maintains that its passenger air bags are safe but says it's adding to the recall as a precaution. NHTSA demanded the expansion in a Nov. 25 letter to Chrysler.The action announced Thursday may not get the company out of hot water with government safety regulators.
