PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION, the best way to get around in New York:
The best way to experience the sights, sounds, smells, feelings and flavors of New York is to walk around. But to cover bigger distances in shorter times, New York City buses and subways are great. Tour buses have their place, but all you really need to do is hop on a city bus to experience the views, or go down into the subway for a direct bee line to your destination.
The MTA has a terrific web

MAMMATUS CLOUDS:

Mammatus clouds are made up
of ice crystals & look like a cellular pattern of pouches or
bubbles, hanging under the base of a cloud. Just as on this June 2009
night, they often follow thunderstorms.

RESTAURANTS:
The absolute coolest time to have dinner in a New York restaurant is when you are hungry. Since the American Revolution, savvy New York restaurateurs have recognized this, and have organized their service around the times people are usually hungry. In order to clarify this phenomenon further, they have broken down such service into four general categories
to coincide with general times of hunger.
restaurateurs have thus given the clever and oh-so-hip names to such times as,
"Breakfast", "Brunch", "Lunch"
and "Dinner".

A bakery /caf& / restaurant, serving delicious salads, open faced sandwiches, quiches, sops, etc & coffees breads and other bakery products.
Many items on the menu are 100% botanical/vegan and many more are organic.
When we visited for my first time, in their Meatpacking district location, I first thought that this is somebody's labor of love, their dream caf& / restaurant, but it turned out it is a chain. Well now. A chain that sereves not just good, but health conscious food. Impressed, yes we are.
After visits to other locations in New York, we have found, that while the quality of the food seems to be the mostly the same
(although the menus very a bit), the quality if their espressos & cappuchinos vary, on a trulu unacceptable scale, as does the service. In Tribeca they served the cappuchino from a huge latte bowl... and the &espresso& in it was
like dishwater. What is worse, the (friendly) staff did not seem to understand what was wrong with it. (super weak espresso and way too much milk, in a bowl of a cup).
In the Park Slope, Brooklyn location, the service was unfathomably slow, two times out of 3 (in a half filled room).
P.S. This is one of the few places in NYC, where you can get your coffee with soy milk.
P.P.S Their &organic breads are handmade daily& by their bakers. We are gaga over their stoneground sourdough ryev & whole wheatr bread.

Dining Room:
Our two latest dinners at the Dining Room:
June 3rd 2013: Four diners having the Seasonal Tasting menu.
The two vegetarian- pescaterians in our group got to substitute a fish dish from the & la carte menu for the meat/fowl dish on the tasting menu.
October 11th, 2013: Two diners, again having the tasting menu.
Consensus, both times: One of the best dinners in our lives and one of the best dining experiences in our lives. The only tasting menu ever that did not leave us feeling overly full and/or uncomfortable. Super fresh ingredients, seemingly non-fussy, but extremely creative cooking that elicited excited &oohs& and &aahhs& throughout
the dinner.
Terrific, professional, yet friendly & humorous service, including the knowledgeable and super nice sommelier that recommended a wine that blew our socks off.
Recent lunch in the Dining Room
was equally blissful.
The more reasonably priced Tavern Room & Bar,
serves very good food.
Popular for good reason. One of our favorite lunch places. We enjoy the &new chef&, Michael Anthony and his team very much.
Our one of our recent lunches in the Tavern was better than ever, with wonderful service. Our waiter really seemed to know his stuff and brought an extra level of joy into this experience. We warmly recommend the sturgeon from the Tavern lunch menu. Another level!

Things to remember in New York:
Sales tax in New York City: 8 7/8 %
In restaurants:
-You have to tip. If you do not like tipping, eat only in self service restaurants. 15% is the smallest acceptable tip. You can also double the amount of the tax. It is common in New York to tip 20%, especially in better restaurants.
-Look carefully at your bill. Make sure it lists every item you ordered (and only the items you ordered), plus the tax. Make sure to see whether the tip is included already. Some restaurants, especially the ones that have a lot of tourists as patrons, automatically add a 15% tip to the bill. If this is the case, you of course do not give an additional tip, unless you want to.
-Always demand to see an itemized bill if it is not provided. Unfortunately waiters at some establishments only present the customer with a check that does not itemize the order, with the tip already included- but the customers have no way of knowing that since they were never presented with an itemized bill.
This is not very common, but we have heard of too many incidents - and we have been the intended targets of this deceitful (and failed) practice about 3 times. Let's just say we have not taken it in stride.
Even in a famous, very respectable hotel's lobby bar a waiter made the mistake of trying to do it to us, maybe because he thought that we were tourists.
To our big dismay, this also happened to us in Brooklyn, of all places, in late March 2010.
